All University Mac users are strongly advised to upgrade from OS X Yosemite operating system to macOS Sierra (v10.12.6), as soon as possible, as Yosemite is no longer supported by Apple. The upgrade will help to ensure that Macs have the latest security, features, and remain compatible with other University systems.

If you are currently running OS X El Capitan (10.11.x) or macOS Sierra (10.12.x) then you do not need to do anything. Find out which operating system version you are currently using.

To upgrade to MacOS Sierra (v10.12.6)

  1. Go to Mac Self Service
  2. Under Categories, click on OS Updates*
  3. A MacOS Sierra icon should appear
  4. Click on Install (this may take a while to complete)

*this will appear if your Mac is compatible with the upgrade.

After you have upgraded to macOS Sierra, it is important to apply further security updates.

OS X 10.11 compatibility resources

  • Adobe Creative Cloud: Adobe reports that Creative Cloud applications are compatible with OS X 10.11
  • Microsoft Office: Microsoft has not identified issues with Office 2011 on OS X 10.11. However, it's recommended that the latest update be installed.
  • Avid: Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) support for Media Composer, Pro Tools, Sibelius, EUCON and ISIS

General incompatibilities

Gatekeeper

OS X 10.9.5 and above require applications to be signed using newer Version 2 signatures in order for Gatekeeper to recognise and allow the application.

Specific incompatibilities

Parallels Desktop

Versions 9 and below are not compatible or supported on OS X 10.11; you must have version 10 or 11. See Parallels Desktop and Mac OS (Host) compatibility
Resolution: Upgrade to Parallels Desktop 9 or above at the Parallels Store. Anyone who already owns Parallels Desktop 9 or 10 should make sure they have downloaded the latest update for their version.

Connecting to Secure VPN

Using the SecureAccess wizard to setup and configure Deakin's Virtual Private Network (VPN) requires Java. On non-Deakin machines, this is likely not installed by default (Deakin Desktop computers have Java automatically installed).

Resolution: Install the Pulse Secure client from the Deakin Software Library.

SMART Notebook Software and Product Drivers

SMART has advised that OS X 10.10 and above (including 10.11 El Capitan) requires 14.2 or above of the SMART software.
Resolution: Will require new licensing under the SMART Notebook Advantage program in order to use SMART software 14.0 or above for either Mac or Windows
