Polytone Mid Of Index Phone Tones

N412i phone ringtones and mid, amr, and mfm.? Ok.so the ringtones that has been set into this phone sucks. But i cant play any mp3 tones inside my phone as my ringtone because it says the ringer setting is unavailable. Can i change this setting? And i can only play mid,mfm and amr files.so anyone know where i can download these for free? Polytone transmissions - a misunderstanding answered
On Saturday 23rd August Mhev posted Msg 1619 'Polytone - with some protocol modifications is ideal for contacting agents'.
Although I don't dismiss the need for the traditional automated announcer at a numbers station -- polytone, with a few minor protocol (but not wavefrom) modifications -- is more than ideal for contacting agents.
Polytone can work with NON-LINEAR transmitters, so any 40 year old junk transmitter will do. Polytone does have a very high EIRP, versus voice -- for long path propagation. [Long path :: Cypress --> Urals, Vadivostok --> Wellington]
I don't know about ABSOLUTE bandwidth efficiency, but I would assume it is 1000x more efficient in terms of speed. Great if you want to send very detailed and long instructions, rotten for routine messages..
Cons:
Your agent needs a decoder with a printer, but software decoders are free on the web for Win95 systems.
- This may tie your agent to computer, albeit they are already tied to a tape recorder.
- Your transmission department may choose to transmit in SSB, a bad idea in my view.
- Very awkward [at customs anyway] in the developing world to use polytone, as polytone also used by 2nd and 3rd world security services.
- Polytone is not for messages sent on a day to day interval; only monthly detailed instructions [beyond 2000 bytes] make the effort worthwhile.
Sending more encoded data does not guarantee the security of your encryption system, the more the decoder folks can intercept the happier they are.
It is not generally thought that XP polytone transmissions are for contacting agents directly and are more likely aimed at diplomatic agencies worldwide for dissemination to agents.
From work carried out by ENIGMA 2000 it is apparent that these signals are best received with a vertically polarised antenna. The actual signals are received in AM mode, being composed of a series of tones sent in MCW.
In the initial stage of a polytone transmission its ID is sent. This ID, constructed of the 100kHz figure of the three frequencies used in that particular schedule, sent three times is then followed by a figure, 0, 1 or 2. This figure denotes the number of messages that will follow. The tones used have been accurately measured and their values used in a decoder program, Xperta, written by Valeriano Martin.
As a series of tones the method of sending needs to be clear of distortion and are no doubt sent by a transmitter with a Class C output. Class C amplification is non-linear and free from distortion. [On the other hand a Class A stage is linear and distortion would be present]. Quite why 'any 40year old transmitter will do' remains a mystery. Given that the originators of the Polytone messages are a serious concern one can assume that the equipment used is of a good commercial standard, maintained and regularly updated. Communications equipment used by diplomatic services [such as that removed from the East German Embassy in London] are surprisingly complex and well maintained - not for them the units sold to Amateur enthusiasts worldwide. [Mind you the Guyanese Air Service used an old modified FT747 txrx for international comms in 1990].
Mhev then mentions a high Effective Isotropic Radiated Power [EIRP] against voice in direct statement for long path propagation, presenting a Cyprus to Wellington circuit via the Urals and Vadivostock [where?]. Why? EIRP has nothing to do with long path propagation . The main difference between this and ERP is the fact that an Isotropic radiator is used, more to the point it is more than feasible that the sending antenna is aimed at the target area. In both cases any figure stated accounts for the power available at the radiator [usually a dipole] having taken all other previous losses into consideration.
Perhaps by stating high he expects that a high power output is required for long path propagation - absolute nonsense again. Accurate frequency selection against propagational factors is an exact skill. Used correctly power output is not a total requirement for the directional propagation along any path and both DoK and PLondon will relate the facts of an interception where the transmitting station, in mid-Pacific, used only 4 Watts, for their International communications. No high power there; just a good understanding of propagation theory.
Then Mhev writes about absolute bandwidth efficiency -- what's this one about? In the intro for XP each pulse lasts 1030ms and the nine sendings of the intro takes a smidgen over 2 mins to send. To speak the intro intelligibly takes just over one and a half minutes, more time efficient that the pulsed offering. When the actual message is sent that is where the true nature of the polytone can be seen. Each group consists of five characters and a space, for that group to be sent takes just 1030ms, the same time as the ID at the intro [perhaps allowing the recipient to make synch adjustments to his decoding equipment]. The bandwidth used for sending XP is just 215Hz; that for voice at least 2700Hz. XP is more resilient to fading and noise.
According to Mhev polytones are 'Great if you want to send very detailed and long instructions, rotten for routine messages.'
Why? Mhev clearly does not understand what he is talking about as he later states, 'Polytone is not for messages sent on a day to day interval; only monthly detailed instructions [beyond 2000 bytes] to make the effort worthwhile.'
Clearly Mhev has never attempted analysis of Polytone transmissions. To refute his above claims May 2003 sendings for 0600z morning schedule are as follows:

Here ten different messages have been sent over the period of one month [this number varies with different schedule requirements]. Out of those two messages are of short length, the others of differing length. In July 35 and 41 group messages have been seen to be sent. On what evidence does Mhev base his assertion on polytone suitability of various message lengths and types?
Assuming that XP is [and it could be as MG states in the last Attention123 column is SWM] utilised by the agent in the field as Mhev suggests:
Surely any agent downloading the Win95 suitable software from the Internet would compromise himself by allowing his IP address to be associated with the downloading of such programs. Would he download? Probably not! Given that Ana Belen Montes used bespoke software supplied by Cuban Diplomats suggests that Mhev's mythical agent may well do a similar thing. Another belter from Mhev suggests that SSB transmission could feasibly be used to transmit XP is an utter nonsense too! In its current MCW format carrier insertion is not an option. If modified to be sent with a suppressed sideband and carrier the reception woud cause problems if the carrier were inserted wrongly [in much the same way as seen with teletype].
We also learnt that Mhev's agent would be tied to a tape recorder - why? Surely he would use the facility of a modern PC to convert to a .wav or .mp3 file?
Importing this equipment via the Customs service of another country would also cause problems according to Mhev. Surely anything pointing to espionage would be taken in via the diplomatic pouches of the interested country. Surely no country would compromise its agents by expecting them to smuggle equipment into the target's country?
Interestingly Mhev then stated that Polytones is also used by 2nd and 3rd world Security Services. When asked by a member to disclose who these services are he replied he *believed* it is still popular in some parts of Africa and stated that its use in Eurasia was not clear to him. His statement can be seen here in Msg 1637 sent 25/08:

Polytone is not as finnkiy as RTTY, and works best with [in my view] good old fashioned AM transmitters.
Cons:
There are no advanced modes, ie: beyond 256 tones. As a transmission mode, it has not really been modernized much for at least a decade [Clover is not polytone, by purest definition].
Notice the statement concerning teletype and polytones, already covered when discussing SSB transmission in place of the current MCW method.
What is this mention of 'no advanced modes beyond 256 tones'? He also states that Polytones have not been modernised for at least a decade, stating that Clover 'is not polytone by purest definition'.
Well, Mhev, Clover is an entirely different system indeed. It sounds nothing like a polytone, its spectral signature is nothing like that of any of the polytones and the number of tones is either 4 or 8, depending on the type of Clover used.
In closing, every claim or statement made in Msg's 1619 and 1637 posted by Mhev has been disproved, wrong assumption is one thing but the posting of uninformed [?] disinformation is another.

Types of ringtones
Monophonic
The original ringtones play only one note at a time.
Polyphonic
A polyphonic ring tone can consist of several notes at a time. The first polyphonic ring tones used sequenced recording methods such as MIDI. Such recordings specify what synthetic instrument should play a note at a given time, and the actual instrument sound is dependent upon the playback device. Later, synthesized instruments could be included along with the composition data, which allowed for more varied sounds beyond the built-in sound bank of each phone.
Truetone
A truetone (also known as 'realtone', 'mastertone', 'superphonic ringtone' or 'audio recording') is simply an audio recording, typically in a common format such as MP3 or AAC. Truetones, which are often excerpts from songs, have become popular as ring tones. Sing tone
A 'sing tone' is a ring tone created in karaoke style, combining a user’s recorded voice (adjusted to be both in time and in tune) with a backing track.
