We're proud to announce that new versions of OpenNI, NITE & PrimeSense- Sensor were updated in the download section of www.openni.org. A full list of changes, the MacOSX version and a complete update of the GitHub sources will happen tomorrow. For now, he's a short list of major changes:. Added the ability to load & save NITE skeleton calibration from files. And you simply run this and accept the defaults. This installs the API and the drivers. Installing OpenNI and as3Kinect for Windows

Equipment that you need:


Kinect
Note: If you have bought your Kinect seperately, you should have your Sensor Power Supply. However if you buy it together with Xbox 360 you will need to get the Power Supply above as it does not come with it. It is the very same equipment needed to setup the OpenKinect variation as stated on the previous post.

What do you need to install on a Windows?

When you first plug the Kinect into your computer, you'll get a notification
telling you that Windows cannot find any drivers for the Kinect hardware. That’s supposed to happen, because you haven’t installed them yet. Press the skip button to skip the Windows from finding the drivers through Windows Update.


Note: If you have already experimented with any other Kinect drivers (NUI or OpenKinect), you’ll need to remove those first.
You will then need the SensorKinect drivers found here. Note that you have to download the correct drivers for your computer, if it is 32-bit then download the 32-bit drivers and etc.
After you have downloaded and installed SensorKinect093-Bin-Win(XX)-v5.1.2.1.msi, go to OpenNI.org download page and for each of the options select stable choose which development package you want for your OS:
OpenNI Binaries
OpenNI Compliant Middleware Binaries
OpenNI Complient Hardware Binaries
So now you should have 3 files something like:
  • openni-win32-1.3.3.6-dev.msi from OpenNI Binaries
  • nite-win32-1.4.2.4-dev.msi from OpenNI Compliant Middleware Binaries
  • sensor-win32-5.0.4.3-redist.msi from OpenNI Complient Hardware Binaries

On the Primesense Nite installation, if prompted for a key, add the following:
0KOIk2JeIBYClPWVnMoRKn5cdY4=
You will then need the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package installed. If you don’t already have it installed, you can download it here.
In my instance I’m using the x86 one, for windows 7 use x64 etc… just grab the latest one available. This allows you to run the OpenNI applications.
Then just follow the installer instructions to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package.

Plug and pray

Now plugin the Kinect – make sure you have the power plugged in as well, not just the USB! Your computer should recognise the Kinect and want to install the drivers – make sure you choose the Primesense ones if prompted – I found that when I had old drivers it remembered the location, so I just zipped up the folder and archived it to remove it from the driver search.
If all goes well you should have 3 hardware installation screens on Windows and the device manager should show the hardware under Primesense

Setup


Now that’s installed there are a few more things you need to do in order to hook up OpenNI and Primesense, namely a few XML config files which you just need to add in the same license key so that Primesense will work for you that key was:

Now that’s done you can start to play around with the examples – there are various wrappers/ API’s available to you to now use this to create applications.
Test out OpenNI by running the NiViewer sample
Test out Primesense by running any of the samples there
At this point you have completed the most difficult parts of this guide. The only things you're missing are the application binaries. Here’s how to get them.
Download the archive file http://www.as3kinect.org/distribution/win/openni_win_as3server.zip
When you unzip this archive, you will find the following files:
1.as3-server.exe—
2.SamplesConfig.xml—
4.pthreadVC2.dll—Unix multithreading library
You also need the AS3 client, which you can download from
http://www.as3kinect.org/distribution/win/openni_demo_pkg.zip. The openni_demo_pkg.zip file contains as3 binaries and client source files. First, run as3-server.exe, and then run test_3d.exe to see how it works.
